Career Corner: Save the date, job seekers!

By Cynthia Blahnik, career advisor.

Whether you are a new or returning student, welcome to the fall semester! While you were away, Career Services (now known as the Career Development Office) was very busy planning out the upcoming school year. We will be hosting career preparation events and workshops, company campus visits, and our 19th annual Career Pathways event in the fall semester and more workshops, company visits and the 9th annual Great Lakes Bay Job Fair in the winter semester. Our offices are also promoting great career research and preparation software such as Focus2 Career Exploration and Big Interview.

Career Development is excited to host a variety of workshops designed to assist the college student in preparing for their future. All workshops are free to attend and will be hosted at both the main campus as well as the Downtown Saginaw Center. Topics including career research, developing a resume and cover letter, using social media, and identifying internship and student employment opportunities will be covered. For more information, visit our office in Room D102, call us at (989) 686-9072 or visit the display case in the main hallway.

Planning for the annual Career Pathways event is well underway, with more than 38 companies from a wide variety of industries already registered. This year’s event will be held Friday, November 8 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the main hallways. This is an event that you don’t want to miss, with dozens of local employers sharing their career paths with students. Delta students who are undecided about their degree programs or who would like more information on their program of choice are encouraged to visit to explore career possibilities and future companies of interest. It is advised that students also make use of the career research tools located in their Delta Portal before and after the event.

To get started working with Career Development, activate your GradLeaders account which not only has up to date information but also all student employment, internships, and local part-time and full-time job openings. Many of the 150+ positions listed on GradLeaders are posted by local employers who would prefer to hire a Delta student over candidates from other schools. Simply log on by visiting www.delta.edu/careerservices, scroll down and click on “Search Job Postings” on the left column.

For students who are new to the college or are unfamiliar with the resources or office provides, we invite you to visit our website www.delta.edu/careerservices or click on the link to Career Development at the bottom of your Delta Student Portal. There you will find job search tools and resources, along with information on our services, which include career advisement, resume and cover letter critiques, mock interviews, and student employment/internship/and full time job search assistance. You may also stop by our offices located in Room D102 to schedule an appointment with a career advisor.

We will share more information on upcoming events in future issues of the Collegiate, but in the meantime be sure to save the date for the Great Lakes Bay Job Fair to be held in the Pioneer Gym from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 26.

We encourage you to take advantage of the many services and resources available to you through Career Development. Our team is here to help and we love what we do! We hope to see you soon in the office or at one of the many upcoming events.
