Spring trip lays the groundwork for a successful softball season

A trip to Florida for spring break sounds like a nice relaxing getaway, however it was all business as the Lady Pioneers softball team traveled south for spring training to prepare for the upcoming season. The team tries to focus purely on softball and play against high quality teams to gauge where they’re at and what they need to do to improve. There were highs and lows on the trip, according to Head Coach Randy Mullard, but overall he felt the trip was a successful one.

“I put a lot of stock in what we accomplished on our trip,” explains Mullard. “If we build on what we did there we are going to be tough.”

Overall the team went 3-5 against teams from three different states. Delta struggled to play complete games on the trip, sometimes relying on either the pitching or the offense exclusively to carry them.

“We played against some really good teams,” explains Mullard. “We were very competitive even in some very close losses.”

On offense there were a couple players that really stepped up on the trip including Shelby Bailey, who hit .450 with one home run. Cassidy Reichard also had a great trip, hitting .586 and leading the team in hits and OBP. The team also got a stellar pitching performance from Jensen Tchorzyndki, who went 2-1 with an ERA of 1.40 in four starts.

As the season gets underway for the Lady Pioneers, they can hopefully take what they learned during spring training and be ready for conference play.

“When we get to the point that when we put our pitching and offense together in the same game we will be tough to beat.”
